In Waiting: Travels in the Shadow of Edwin Muir
By Michael W. Russell
198 pages, Paperbound

'. . . Scotland is gradually being emptied of its population, its spirit, its wealth, industry, art, intellect, and innate character . . . no civilisation that is composed merely of exploiters and expolited can endure for long.'

That was the 'main conclusion' of the poet Edwin Muir's Scottish Journey, an account of his trip around Scotland in the summer of 1934. Written during the very depth of the Depression, it painted a picture of a country gradually disappearing from modern life.

At yet over 60 years later a very different Scotland was emerging from the shadows. Scotland was 'in waiting' for the establishment of its first parliament for almost 300 years; there was a new confidence in the air.

In the early months of 1998 Michael Russell retraced much of Muir's journey to look at Scotland again to assess not only how much had changed, but also in which direction the people of Scotland might be headed. His journey took him from Edinburgh down through the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway, then on to his native Ayrshire and up through Lanarkshire. He then visited Glasgow, Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and the Western Isles, before returning to his home in Argyll. In a lively entertaining and thought-provoking account Russell revisits many old haunts, meeting a wide range of people with differing aspirations and discovers not only some of our past and present, but also a lot of possibilities (and problems) that still confornt 'the invisible nation of Europe'.

'Like Muir's journey, this is a bundle of impressions rather than a definitive textbook. But unlike Muir I found a country filling up, not emptying - and filling up at last with hope.'
