"The DIffernece is in the Leather"
Barrhead Leather bags are hand-crafted in their workshop using wonderfully supple Scottish deerskin leather, giving them uniqueness in terms of both quality and feel.
The sustainably sourced leather comes from seasonally culled Scottish deerskins tanned using traditional methods passed down from father to son through seven generations. The soft water from the Levern Burn, which flows beside thier small tannery, combines the vegetable tannins and oils in this natural, environmentally responsible, tanning process.
The bags are 100% made in Scotland, from the tanning to the stitching, using some of the very best of Scotland’s natural resources.
"15 years ago, we discovered that 120,000 skins go to landfill each year as a by-product of the Scottish venison industry. Having spent many years in developing countries, working on UNIDO-sponsored projects to help developing countries use their indigenous raw materials, We were shocked to find such waste in our own country.
We decided to do something about it. We moved from primarily working on small skins, such as calf, sheep, goat, to processing over 5,000 deerskins per year. We believe this is a sustainable approach to manufacturing, both in terms of a low carbon footprint by using local raw material, and employing environmentally friendly practices to help protect the future.
This also results in increased revenue going into the rural economy while eliminatig the waste disposal costs to artisanal venison processors."
