A young Irishman named Liam O'Connor leaves his native Ireland for America aboard the tall ship Master James in 1849. He finds himself trying to survive in a very different atmosphere from that of the quiet Cork town in which he grew up. He spends many years out West, fights on both the Union and Confederate sides in the Civil War, and then returns to Ireland by way of the British Army in Northwest India. While on the battlefield in India, he meets a young man who leaves him troubled for the rest of his life. Finally, he returns home to the woman he had loved and left 17 years before. This is a fast-moving novel that leaves the reader no time to meditate.
